Dry, brittle ends are almost never caused by one bad product. They are the result of a routine that loses water faster than it replaces it. This is the exact sequence we use in the studio for type 4 hair, and it takes about 45 minutes from start to finish.

1. Pre-poo with oil

Warm two tablespoons of olive or avocado oil and work it through the ends before you get anywhere near water. Leave it for twenty minutes. This slows the swelling of the hair shaft, so less moisture escapes during washing.

2. Cleanse gently

Dilute your shampoo with an equal amount of water and focus on the scalp only, letting the runoff clean the mid-lengths. Rinse with lukewarm water, because hot water lifts the cuticle and lets moisture straight out.

3. Layer in this order

  • Water, the only true moisturiser.
  • Leave-in conditioner, to hold that water.
  • Oil or butter, to seal it in.

Do this on soaking wet hair, and do not touch the hair again until it is dry. Frizz is simply hair that was disturbed while it was still settling.
