We spent six weeks rotating six popular leave-in conditioners through the same wash-day routine, on the same head of 4C hair. Each product got two full weeks, and everything else stayed identical: cleanser, water temperature, drying method, the lot.
What we looked for
- Slip that lets a wide-tooth comb pass without tugging.
- Softness twenty-four hours after application.
- Build-up after the second wash.
The verdict
The richer butter-based formulas won on softness but lost on build-up. The light water-based sprays won on slip but needed resealing by day two. The sweet spot was a mid-weight cream applied to soaking wet hair, then sealed with a light oil.
The takeaway: mid-weight creams, applied generously to wet hair, outperformed both extremes. Price was not a reliable guide to performance.
